| Nalandians have claimed the inaugural over 35 Sri Lankan Schools Cricket Championship 2009 in Sydney Article by President Harindra Wijesekera "Big Match" Cricket Festival -Nalandians are the Champions Nalandians have claimed the inaugural over 35 Sri Lankan Schools Cricket Championship today(19-04-2009) in Sydney. The day commenced with a set back having lost to St. Benedicts cheaply. This did force all characteristics of a knockout series upon our team from the 1st ball of the second match. We had to step-up and win every match to be in the series, and so we did until the last ball was bowled. The true spirit of the Nalandains was on display for the whole Sri Lankan community in Sydney to witness. It was a splendid batting, bowling and fielding display from the boys. The efforts were well coordinated by captain courageous Daminda Wijesekera. He led our team to victory from the front. Also, Daminda was well supported by a committed team that excelled in all facets of the game even to overcome significant injuries. The agile keeping behind the sticks of Ajith Gunasinghe made significant contributions to our victory at crucial moments of the game. The quick, accurate and the dependable bowling of Waruna Kumarage got us to good starts during the series. The early wicket in the semi finals against Trinity created the environment for a good Nalandian victory. The opening left and right had combination of Jagath Piyasiri and Daminda Wijesekera was a pleasure to watch. They were a force to reckon, with solid top order performances that steered us to victory on many occasions. All round performances of Bandula De Silva and Chandana Jayasekera kept the opposition guessing throughout the series. The cricket mastery of Bandula De Silva helped the team immensely with forward planning. The crafty bowling of Duminda De Silva and Madura Perera steered us to safety on many instances. The excellent fielding performances of Chameen Battegoda and Mangala Siriwardena helped the team claim wickets at important moments of the game. The bowling efforts of Chameen Battegoda kept the scoring rate down against Zahira College in the preliminary series. The excellent all-round performance of Daminda Wijesekera has earned the most valuable player, the Man-of-the-Series. Congratulations Daminda you really deserve this accolade, and the car -J! These men have made us all proud to be Nalandians. Thank you. Video http://www.youtube.com/user/ImageMatrixVideo Photos http://picasaweb.google.com.au/chameen/SchoolCricketCarnival2009NalandaWins# |
